Shopping for Clothes Thoughtfully: Where to Start
Many people want to buy clothes with more thought. There is no single legal definition of terms like "sustainable" in fashion, so the most reliable approach is to look at the facts yourself: what a garment is made from, where it is made, and how long it will last. Here are some practical starting points.
Look at your shopping habits
Start with how often you buy, not only where. Are your purchases well-considered pieces you will wear on repeat, or trend-driven items worn a couple of times? Keeping a note of what you actually wear for a month can be revealing.
Be curious about the brand
Look at what a brand tells you about how its clothes are made and what they are made from. Specific facts, such as the fibre, the country of manufacture and care instructions, are more useful than broad statements. Our FAQs cover how we work, and you can contact us with any questions.
Understand the fibres
Different fibres behave differently. Cotton, linen, wool and cashmere are natural fibres; TENCEL™ Modal and Lyocell are made from wood pulp; nylon and polyester are synthetic. Each has its own feel, durability and care needs, so choose the one that suits how you will use the garment. Check the label for the exact composition.
Buy items designed to last
If it is accessible to you, buying a well-made piece that holds its shape and colour can be better value than replacing cheaper items repeatedly. A capsule wardrobe of core pieces, or simply buying less fast fashion, are both ways to do this.
Ask questions
You are entitled to ask a brand about materials, production and delivery. If you have questions about Lavender Hill Clothing, see our FAQs or get in touch.
