Article: A Wardrobe Not to Die For

A wardrobe not to die for – where clothes are made

A Wardrobe Not to Die For

The Rana Plaza garment factory collapse in Bangladesh in April 2013 made headlines all over the world. Eight floors of a commercial building collapsed, trapping hundreds of garment workers. More than 1,100 people died.

The Rana Plaza tragedy

The day before the collapse, cracks were found in the building's pillars and an engineer advised that it was unsafe. Workers were sent home, but the next day factory managers told them to return to work. Within a short time the building began to collapse.

What changed afterwards

Rana Plaza led to far greater scrutiny of how clothing is made. Many brands signed up to safety agreements for Bangladeshi factories, and shoppers began asking more questions about where their clothes come from.

Where our clothes are made

We make our clothes in the UK and Portugal. Most of our t-shirts are made in Portugal, and our socks and cashmere are made in the UK. You can read more about where and how we make our clothes on our fabrics and production page.

Questions worth asking

When you buy clothing, it is reasonable to ask where it was made, who made it and what it is made from. Brands that can answer these questions plainly are easier to trust.
