Curating a Capsule Wardrobe
Why curate a capsule wardrobe
An edit of versatile staples can save time and help you feel put-together. Here are some tips, and classic pieces to get you started.
With much of life based at home for many of us, sharp suits and heels have been pushed to the back of the wardrobe, and statement pieces have lost some of their appeal. A more considered approach means reaching for clothes that work through a busy day and are comfortable too. A capsule wardrobe is a curated edit of timeless staples you can mix and match for pared-back outfits.
Experts suggest anything from 20 to 50 pieces, but the point is clothes that suit you and can be easily rotated. Get it right and you have reliable outfit formulas for every morning, less time spent deciding what to wear, and a wardrobe that feels easier to live with. Spring-clean season is a good moment to streamline.
Getting started: 5 tips for defining your capsule pieces
- Jot down your actual lifestyle: what you do and how you dress in an average week.
- Pull out the foundation pieces you wear most often, probably a mix of elevated and everyday, plus a few less-worn clothes that you love.
- Check you have mostly neutral shades, with a few brighter colours, that cover daily life, work and occasions.
- With what is left over, decide what you are happy to sell, pass on or donate. Items you are attached to but do not wear can be stored elsewhere.
- Test your new wardrobe over a regular week. If any pieces are missing or need updating, adapt from there.
