The Ultimate Guide to Finding the Perfect Black T-Shirt

The Ultimate Guide to Finding the Perfect Black T-Shirt

A black T-shirt goes with almost everything you own, works across seasons and hides marks better than lighter colours. Finding a good one comes down to fit, fabric and how you plan to wear it.

Choose the style that suits you

Crew neck

The classic. A crew neck T-shirt gives fuller coverage at the chest and works under blazers, knitwear and on its own with jeans or shorts.

V-neck

A V-neck opens up the neckline slightly and layers well under shirts and cardigans. It also works with a necklace or scarf.

Long sleeves

A long-sleeved black tee is useful from autumn to spring, on its own or as a base layer under knitwear or a denim jacket.

Slim, regular and relaxed fits

  • Slim fit follows the body and looks neat tucked into high-waisted trousers or skirts.
  • Regular fit is the easiest all-rounder: not tight, not baggy.
  • Relaxed fit has more room through the body and suits casual outfits with jeans or joggers.

Not sure which fit is for you? Try our T-shirt quiz and check the size guide before ordering.

Graphic and luxury versions

A printed black tee makes a more casual statement, while a black top in a finer fabric such as silk or a fine-gauge knit dresses up more easily. For everyday wear, a plain tee in a good fabric is the more versatile buy.

Fabric: what to look for

  • Cotton is breathable and comfortable for daily wear. Some cotton shrinks slightly on first washes, so follow the care label.
  • TENCEL™ Modal is a soft, smooth fibre with a fluid drape, often blended with cotton.
  • Polyester and other synthetics are common in sportswear because they dry quickly, but they can feel less breathable and shed microfibres in the wash.
  • Blends combine the properties of two fibres. Check the percentages on the label.

Our T-shirts are designed in Britain and most are made in Portugal. We use cotton, including Supima cotton in selected pieces, and TENCEL™ Modal.

Getting the fit right

  • Shoulder seams should sit at the edge of your shoulders.
  • Sleeves should sit comfortably on the upper arm without digging in.
  • The hem should cover your waistband when you lift your arms, unless you want a cropped look.
  • Sizing varies between brands, so use each brand's size chart rather than assuming your usual size.

Styling a black tee

  • Casual: jeans and trainers, or a denim jacket over the top.
  • Smart: a tailored blazer and trousers, with loafers or ankle boots.
  • Layered: under a cardigan, over a long-sleeved top, or with a scarf in cooler months.

Keeping black looking black

  • Turn the T-shirt inside out before washing.
  • Wash at 30 degrees or the temperature on the care label, on a gentle cycle.
  • Use a detergent made for darks and avoid bleach.
  • Wash with other dark colours.
  • Air dry where you can. Heat speeds up fading and shrinking.
  • Iron inside out on a low to medium setting, or use a pressing cloth.
  • Store folded in a drawer, away from direct sunlight. Hanging can stretch the neckline and shoulders.

A short history of the black T-shirt

The T-shirt began as an undergarment in the early twentieth century. It moved into everyday outerwear after the Second World War, and in the 1950s film stars such as Marlon Brando and James Dean helped make it a fashion item. Punk and rock musicians in the 1970s and 1980s made black a staple colour, and it has stayed a wardrobe basic since.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a black T-shirt last?

It depends on the fabric, how often you wear it and how you wash it. A well-made tee that is washed gently can last for years. Replace it when the fabric thins or the colour has faded beyond what you like.

Can I wear a black T-shirt for a formal occasion?

Yes, in a fine fabric with a well-fitted blazer, tailored trousers and good shoes. A watch or simple jewellery finishes the look.

How do I stop black T-shirts fading?

Wash inside out, cool, on a gentle cycle, with a detergent for darks. Skip bleach and air dry.

Should I air dry or tumble dry?

Air drying is gentler. If you do tumble dry, use a low heat and take the T-shirt out promptly.

What is ring-spun cotton?

It is cotton yarn that has been twisted and thinned during spinning, which gives a smoother, stronger yarn and a softer fabric than basic open-end yarn.

Any tips for buying T-shirts online?

Use the size chart, check the fibre composition and read the returns information before you order. If you are between sizes and the fabric is cotton, consider sizing up.
