Meet Our Makers: Behind the Scenes of How We Make Our Clothes

Key Points

  • Most of our t-shirts are made in Portugal; our socks and cashmere are made in the UK; our alpaca pieces are made in Peru.
  • Our Portuguese factory is led by a mother-daughter team and employs over 70 women.
  • We work with a small number of makers so we can visit and know the people who make our clothes.

Introduction

Behind every Lavender Hill piece are the people who cut, sew, knit and finish it. Here is a look at who they are and how we work with them.

The Heart of Lavender Hill

Lavender Hill was founded in 2013 by Isobel Ridley, who trained at Burberry in London. From the start the aim was simple, well-made basics that feel soft and last. Making them well means working closely with the makers.

Our Makers in Portugal

Most of our t-shirts are made in Portugal by a factory led by a mother-daughter team, who employ over 70 women. They cut, sew and finish our t-shirts, nightwear and tops.

Our Makers in the UK

Our socks and cashmere are made in the UK. Our cashmere is made in Scotland.

Our Alpaca Makers in Peru

Our alpaca knitwear and accessories are made in Peru.

How We Work With Our Makers

  • We work with a small number of suppliers, so we know the people behind each piece.
  • Our fabrics and garments are made to our own specifications.
  • We design in Britain and oversee production ourselves.

The Fabrics We Choose

We use cotton, linen, merino, cashmere, alpaca and TENCEL™ Modal and Lyocell. See Behind the Seams: Our Fabrics for what each one is like.

Supporting the Community

In 2020 we produced and donated over 20,000 face masks to the Katherine Low Settlement in Battersea. We have also taken part in The King's Trust Change A Girl's Life campaign, and offer a Thrift+ bag in our parcels so you can pass on clothes you no longer wear. See our story.

What You Can Do

  • Ask any brand where its clothes are made and who makes them.
  • Buy fewer, better pieces and look after them.

Conclusion

We are proud of the people who make our clothes, and happy to answer questions about how they are made. Get in touch, or read more on our fabrics and production page.
