Why Ethical Women’s T-Shirts Are Worth the Investment

Why a Well-Made Women's T-Shirt Is Worth the Investment

A T-shirt is one of the most-worn items in a wardrobe, which makes it one of the easiest places to see the value of paying a little more for something well made. Here is how to judge whether a women's T-shirt is worth the money.

What to look for in a T-shirt

  • Fibre. Cotton, TENCEL™ Modal and linen are common choices. Check the label for percentages.
  • Weight and construction. A medium-weight fabric with neat, even stitching and a stable neckline holds its shape for longer.
  • Where it was made. A clear country of manufacture is a basic piece of information any brand should be able to give you.
  • Fit. A T-shirt you like the fit of gets worn more often, which is what makes it good value.

Be wary of broad terms such as "ethical" or "eco" on a label with no detail behind them. There is no single legal definition of either, and a good brand should be able to tell you specifics: fibre, country, factory type.

Cost per wear

Divide the price by the number of times you expect to wear it. A T-shirt worn once a week for two years is worn around a hundred times, so even a modest difference in how long it lasts changes the maths. A cheaper T-shirt that loses its shape, twists or thins after a few washes can end up costing more per wear.

Quality and comfort

Soft, breathable fabrics are comfortable for everyday wear. Natural and plant-based fibres such as cotton and TENCEL™ Modal tend to feel smoother against the skin than many synthetics, though feel is personal, so check fabric descriptions and try pieces on where you can.

Making a T-shirt last

  • Wash at the temperature on the care label, and air dry where you can.
  • Wash like colours together and avoid bleach.
  • Fold rather than hang, to protect the neckline.
  • Repair small snags and loose seams early.

About our T-shirts

Lavender Hill Clothing is an independent British brand, founded in 2013 by Isobel Ridley, who trained at Burberry in London. Our T-shirts are designed in Britain and most are made in Portugal, in a factory led by a mother-daughter team that employs over 70 women. We use cotton, including Supima cotton in selected pieces, and TENCEL™ Modal.

Timeless styles also work well in a capsule wardrobe, where a handful of well-chosen pieces mix and match. Browse our T-shirts by fit or take the T-shirt quiz to find the right style.

In short

A T-shirt is worth the investment if you like the fit, the fabric is something you can identify, and it holds up to regular washing. Check the details, divide by the number of wears, and look after it.
