Will the Vegan Clothing Trend Last?

Vegan clothing: will the trend last?

Interest in vegan living has grown in recent years, and for many people it now extends beyond food to clothing, cosmetics and toiletries. This article explains what vegan clothing is, which materials are involved, and what to look for if you want to buy it.

Why do people choose veganism?

People choose a vegan lifestyle for different reasons. The most common is the treatment of animals: vegan products are made without animal-derived materials. Others are motivated by environmental questions or personal health, and these are areas where views and evidence vary, so it is worth reading widely.

What is lifestyle veganism?

Lifestyle veganism means applying vegan principles beyond what you eat. That can include choosing clothes, cosmetics and toiletries that contain no animal-derived ingredients.

What is vegan clothing?

Vegan clothing is made without animal-derived materials. Leather, fur, wool, silk, cashmere, alpaca and down all come from animals, so garments containing them are not vegan. Plant-based and man-made fabrics, such as cotton, linen, viscose, modal and lyocell, and synthetic fibres, are animal-free in themselves. Buttons, glues, dyes and trims can also contain animal-derived ingredients, so check the product description or ask the brand.

A note on Lavender Hill

Our range is not vegan. We use cotton, TENCEL™ Modal and TENCEL™ Lyocell, linen, merino, cashmere, alpaca and silk in a few pieces. TENCEL™ Modal is made from beech wood pulp. If you are shopping vegan, check the fabric on each product page. You can read more on our fabrics and production page.

Will the vegan clothing trend last?

Nobody can say for certain. More brands now label which products contain animal-derived materials, which makes it easier for shoppers to choose. Whatever the trend, checking fabric content and care labels is a useful habit. You can browse our T-shirts, loungewear or the full range and read the fabric details on each product.
