Earth Day
Earth Day comes around once per year and is a chance for us to celebrate the planet while directing attention to protecting our environment. First celebrated in 1970, this annual worldwide event has now come to include a range of events, initiatives and campaigns in more than 193 countries. For 2020, the theme of Earth Day is climate action. While our attention is noticeably elsewhere right now, the issue of climate change and protecting our Earth remains more relevant than ever. But where does fashion fit within this?
The future of fashion
As one of the biggest polluting industries in the world, the fashion industry has come under scrutiny not only because of its damage to the environment, considering its impact on water, air and soil, but also because of its sometimes questioned impact on people and communities around the world.
However, brands across the world have woken up and are responding to the pressure for change. As well as looking at supply chains, the welfare of factory workers and the fabrics being used in products, we’re seeing plenty more brands taking action, from using sustainable materials to re-thinking the packaging they use on their fashion items. We think there’s a long way to go, but we’re hoping to see real positive change here - and organisations like Fashion Revolution are making sure the movement continues.
Where does Lavender Hill Clothing stand?
At Lavender Hill Clothing, we don’t see our items as ‘fashion’ and tend to steer away from the notion of ‘ethical fashion’. To us, the word fashion implies a trend, and we know that trends come and go, meaning that clothes within those trends soon become dated and thus deemed as unwearable.
For us, producing sustainable and ethical clothing items that are staples for every woman’s wardrobe means that we pour time and effort into creating timeless pieces. Not only are our each of our individual clothing items ideal as part of a capsule wardrobe, they are long-lasting and are made to the highest environmental standards in carbon neutral facilities. Plus, our core fabrics are all derived from natural materials which are strong, durable, soft and renewable, and which keep their shape and colour wash after wash. We consider this the true definition of wardrobe staples and a step away from what we consider ‘fashion’.
We celebrate Earth Day
Earth Day 2022 will fall on April 22nd. We’ve included our favourite tips below, because together we can improve the impact we make on this planet.
Tips:
- Use a cloth towel rather than a paper towel
- Turn off the lights when you leave a room
- Collect rainwater to pour on your plants, flowers or herbs
- Try creating a zero waste kitchen (this site can help create recipes out of random ingredients so none have to go to waste)
