Linen Fabric
Why we love linen clothing
At Lavender Hill Clothing, we’re no strangers to putting real thought and consideration into every strand of fabric we put into our clothing. From our Modal to our cashmere, we use fabrics that are sustainable and ethical, that feel great and that are long lasting. The same goes for linen clothing. As summer is coming fast, we’re shedding our heavy winter layers in favour of something a little lighter, breezier and more comfortable. That’s where our linen clothing comes in. Not only does linen feel great against the skin, there’s a whole host of other reasons we love it, too. Read our take on why we love linen clothing below.
1. Planet Friendly
The most important point on our list: linen clothing ticks all of the boxes when it comes to sustainability and treading as lightly as we can on this planet. Not only does linen clothing have a lower environmental impact than cotton clothing due to less water being required during the production process, it is also made from the stalks of flax plants where almost all of the flax plant can be used, leading to very little wastage. Linen plants also flourish in poor soils with minimal, if any, fertilizer required. That’s a big win in our eyes.
2. Cool as a Cucumber
Whether you live in a busy city or the countryside, we can all be hit by the heat as we approach the spring and summer seasons. Wearing the right fabrics is essential for beating the sweat, and linen clothing could just be your next best friend. The fibres in linen clothing are hollow, allowing more airflow over your skin than other materials and also hold up to 20% of their dry weight in moisture without feeling damp to touch. Who knew that the breezy, light feeling that’s unique to linen clothing had such scientific properties?
3. Great For Sensitive Skin
Even for those who don’t have sensitive skin, linen clothing can be a breath of fresh air around your body. Not only does it lack the clinginess of standard cotton clothing, it is also hypoallergenic meaning it’s great for those with allergies or sensitive skin. Part of this is because linen fabric and clothing is produced in such a way that exposure to harsh chemicals is avoided, and the linen growing process tends to avoid fertilizers and pesticides. Have we convinced you on linen clothing yet?
4. No Need To Iron
Perfect for busy bees, linen clothing requires minimal effort one it has been washed. Linen clothing is actually one of the few fabrics that avoids creasing once washed, meaning there’s no need to iron it. Natural crinkles in linen clothing are expected, which are part of linen’s naturally textured look, but there’ll be no major creases. So you can wash it, dry it and throw it on.
5. Long Lasting & Strong
Linen is a natural fibre - like Modal which is used in many of our products and is derived from the pulp of beech trees - and has been used for centuries because of its amazing properties. Here at LHC, we love it because it is long-lasting, strong and durable - perfect for all kinds of activities, all year long. It is also biodegradable and recyclable, however we’d hope that any linen clothing items would be kept for many years to come without the need to replace due to the fabric remaining strong during wear-and-tear.
6. Luxurious Feel
It’s hard to beat the luxurious feeling of linen clothing against the skin. Whether you’re layering up in a linen top or trousers, there’s something about linen clothing that evokes a feeling of freedom and pure comfort against the skin. The distinct feeling of linen is no doubt due to the fact that it is a natural fibre which remains untampered during the production process. We also find that linen flatters all kinds of figures; from curvaceous women to the slimmer frames and shorter heights, there’s a linen clothing item out there for every woman. There’s not many other clothing fabrics that can have this claim.
