Why We Love Linen

With summer on its way, we swap heavy winter layers for something lighter and more breathable. Linen is the fabric we reach for, and it features in our linen pieces. Here is what makes it worth wearing.

Why we like linen

1. It is cool to wear

Linen fibres are hollow and the weave is open, so air moves easily across the skin. Linen can also absorb a fair amount of moisture, often quoted as up to 20% of its dry weight, before it feels damp. That is why it suits hot weather, whether you are in the city or the countryside.

2. It is made from flax

Linen comes from the stalks of the flax plant. It is a natural plant fibre, in the same broad family as the cellulose fibres such as cotton and TENCEL™ Modal.

3. It does not cling

Linen has a crisp, textured hand rather than a clingy one, so it sits away from the body in warm weather. It also softens with each wash.

4. Low effort care

Linen does crease, and that relaxed, crinkled look is part of its appeal. Wash it, shake it out, dry it flat or on a line, and wear it. If you prefer a smoother finish, a quick steam or a warm iron while it is slightly damp does the job.

5. It lasts

Linen is a strong fibre that has been used for textiles for centuries, and it tends to hold up well to regular wear and washing.

6. It dresses up or down

A linen t-shirt or trousers work for the beach, the office or a weekend lunch. The texture gives simple shapes some interest, and there is a cut for most tastes.
